Buyer's Guide to Printers

by Answers 2000 Limited

There two main types of printers in use today: inkjets and laser printers:
  • Inkjet printers are often cheap to buy. However, looking at only the initial purchase price may be deceptive, as the cost of ink refills and inkjet paper may add up quickly.
  • Laser printers are usually more expensive to buy initially, but can be cheaper, and often more reliable, in the long-run. Laser printers are often preferred for business use.
In addition to just the printer, you may be able to get one multifunction device (usually for laser printers only) which acts as some or all of printer, scanner, fax, and copier. This can save money and desk space, provided of course you don't need to (for example) fax and print at the same time.

Some other factors you may wish to consider when choosing a printer, include:
  • Speed of printing
  • Resolution - more DPI ("Dots per inch") corresponds to better quality printing
  • Whether the printer supports color or just black and white
  • The physical size of the printer - some printers can take up a lot of space.
