Buyer's Guide to Notebook Computers

by Answers 2000 Limited

Thinking about buying a new notebook computer?

These tips will help you select the right one:
  • Don't choose a notebook just because it looks good. Make sure the features (RAM memory, disk space, processor speed, included software, etc.) meet your needs.
  • Take note of the weight. It's no fun to be lugging a heavy computer around!
  • Notebooks with integrated CDs, DVDs, floppy drives, etc., usually weigh more - but if you don't need all these features all the time, you could choose a notebook with multipurpose bays, allowing you to leave unneeded components at home when travelling.
  • If you expect to need to transfer data to and from your notebook, you'll need at least one of these:
    • A firewire ("IEEE 1394") port.
    • A USB2 port.
    • A network connection (if you want to connect your notebook to a company or home network).
    • A CD-RW or DVD-RW drive. You'll have to copy files on to the CDs or DVDs, but at least you can transfer lots of information in one go (unlike a floppy disk which has extremely limited storage capacity).
