Click Here | Product Description: Half a century has passed since Australia's New South Wales government launched a competition to give Sydney a new music and performance centre. The result of that competition is the magnificent Sydney Opera House designed by the visionary Danish architect Jorn Utzon (b.1918) and the starting point for "Building a Masterpiece: The Sydney Opera House". When construction began, few could have imagined the enduring impact that Utzon's creation would have on Sydney, nor indeed Australia. But any great feat of imagination and ingenuity creates sub-plots, and the Opera House, perhaps more than any other twentieth-century structure of its stature, has generated many. "Building a Masterpiece" explores the many untold chapters in the long history of the Opera House's gestation, development and completion - of individuals whose careers were made or broken by the Opera House, the companies whose reputations were secured through their association with the building, and the pioneering construction methods, innovative technologies and methodologies developed to meet the demands of its unprecedented design and challenging construction. The workers who built the building, the politicians, architects and members of the public who championed it and its often beleaguered architect are discussed too as is its current world status as a symbol of Australia. Comprising an introduction and ten engaging essays, written by eminent authors and experts in the field, this comprehensive and richly illustrated book offers a unique account of the Sydney Opera House and is essential reading for anyone wishing to gain fresh insights into the complex history of this iconic building. |

Click Here | Product Description: Jorn Utzon was a Dane of great consequence. A man who saw visions in architecture that others could only dream of. Not everyone may know his name but we all know his legacy, the Sydney Opera House. A world heritage icon conceived in the 1950's and opened to heralded acclaim in 1973. Buildings come and go, they are the very fabric of society and show a great deal about the way in which we live. 'Living shapes' that ultimately come to represent our journey as nations and individuals. Indeed my own individual journey carried me from Germany to Sydney as a student, where the raising sails at Bennelong Point, the awe that is the Sydney Opera House, welcomed me that bright sunny first day. A moment I will always carry. There is a fine line between fascination and art and very often photographers combine the two to present us with a unique viewpoint that we might have missed otherwise. Within the pages of my book, I will show you my fascination, my love and indeed the art that Jorn Utzon's 'tour de force' conveys, through my lens and perception. I have spent many years, observing and photographing the Sydney Opera House as the light played off its tiles. Each moment giving us a different perspective, an alternative picture and a new set of emotions. I walked the pathways and smelt the air as it crested in over the Harbour. Moreover I endeavoured to show that this centre for the arts is more than just a building or architectural wonder. It is something for everyone, clasped firm in the hearts of the Australian people and its nation and offered to all who come to experience it. Jorn Utzon perhaps sums it up best himself: 'Art continues to live on for generations in manifold forms'. I hope that in some way, I can reach out to you with my eyes and images so that you too can feel the essence captured, presented and collected herein. |

Click Here | Product Description: Jorn Utzon referred to his Opera House as a kind of "cathedral", analogous to a Gothic church in the way that light and movement play across its public spaces. Its complex shell-like roof structures echo Gothic arches in section, but the building breaks with all precedent in its three-dimensional form. Finding a practical solution to the construction of these roofs occupied the architect and the engineer Ove Arup for many years and necessitated considerable experimentation with pre-cast concrete technology. Disputes with his client led to Utzon's resignation and the Opera House looked for a time as if it might be a white elephant. This book looks at the building that since its opening in 1973, after a 16-year gestation, has already become an Australian national icon. |
