Chapters: The Concert for Bangladesh, Stan Polley, Dan Matovina. Excerpt: Badfinger was a rock band formed in Swansea, Wales in the early 1960s who became one of the earliest representatives of the post-60s power pop genre. During the early 1970s the band was at times tagged as the heir apparent to The Beatles, partly because of their close working relationship with them and partly because of their similar sound. The band had four consecutive worldwide hit songs and contributed "Without You," a Number One Billboard hit for Harry Nilsson which was covered by hundreds of artists. Badfinger's two principally-known singers and songwriters, Pete Ham and Tom Evans committed suicide in 1975 and 1983. After Badfinger's recording contract with Apple lapsed, band members entrusted their financial affairs to American businessman Stan Polley. Echoing much of the Beatles' story, internal squabbling, artistic differences and alleged financial mismanagement ensued and eventually led to the bands' demise. Subsequent attempts to reform Badfinger at various times over the following decade floundered, due in large part to the earlier suicides of Pete Ham and Tom Evans, the band's main creative force. The band's story turned out to be what has been called "the classic rags-to-riches story with a tragic Shakespearean ending," and "a tragic drama set to musicbeautiful music." Badfinger originated in 1961 as a band out of Swansea, South Wales called The Panthers. The Panthers' lineup contained Pete Ham (lead guitar) (born Peter William Ham, , in Townhill, Swansea, South Wales died ), Ron Griffiths (bass guitar) (born Ronald Llewellyn Griffiths, , in Swansea, South Wales), Roy Anderson (drums), and David 'Dai' Jenkins (guitar) (born David Owen Jenkins, , in Swansea, South Wales). After a handful of moniker chang...

Excerpt: The Beatles were an English rock band, formed in Liverpool in 1960 and one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed acts in the history of popular music. From 1962 the group consisted of John Lennon (rhythm guitar, vocals), Paul McCartney (bass guitar, vocals), George Harrison (lead guitar, vocals) and Ringo Starr (drums, vocals). Rooted in skiffle and 1950s rock and roll, the group later worked in many genres ranging from folk rock to psychedelic pop, often incorporating classical and other elements in innovative ways. The nature of their enormous popularity, which first emerged as the "Beatlemania" fad, transformed as their songwriting grew in sophistication. The group came to be perceived as the embodiment of progressive ideals, seeing their influence extend into the social and cultural revolutions of the 1960s. With an early five-piece line-up of Lennon, McCartney, Harrison, Stuart Sutcliffe (bass) and Pete Best (drums), The Beatles built their reputation in Liverpool and Hamburg clubs over a three-year period from 1960. Sutcliffe left the group in 1961, and Best was replaced by Starr the following year. Moulded into a professional outfit by music store owner Brian Epstein after he offered to act as the group's manager, and with their musical potential enhanced by the hands-on creativity of producer George Martin, The Beatles achieved UK mainstream success in late 1962 with their first single, "Love Me Do". Excerpt: The Concert for Bangladesh (originally titled The Concert for Bangla Desh) is a live triple album and double DVD by George Harrison and celebrity friends performed in aid of the homeless Bengali refugees of the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War. Performed on 1 August 1971 at New York City's Madison Square Garden, The Concert for Bangladesh was a pioneering charity event, preceding Live Aid by 14 years. After being made aware of the gravity of the situation in what was then known as East Pakistan by friend and musician Ravi Shankar, Harrison quickly organised two performances in their aid, in addition to composing and releasing a single called "Bangla-Desh" just preceding the event. With Harrison, highly popular following the success of All Things Must Pass, leading the shows, he wanted to surround himself with his closest musician friends, including Eric Clapton and Bob Dylan (both of whom were in reclusive states at that time), in addition to Billy Preston, Badfinger, Leon Russell, Shankar, and Ringo Starr, among others. The two concerts on 1 August 1971 were highly successful, with a cheque for US$243,418.50 being immediately sent to UNICEF for relief. All involved were pleased with a job well done. As much as $15 million was made by the album and film, but the money was held in an Internal Revenue Service escrow account for years because the concert organisers hadn't applied for tax-exempt status. It's uncertain how much money actually went to relieve the initial refugee crisis and Harrison himself was said to have been "disgusted" over the matter. Shortly before Christmas in 1971, The Concert for Bangladesh was released in the US, while appearing in the UK shortly after New Year's Day 1972. It was an immediate best-seller, ...
