Click Here | Product Description: Poor even by the standards of West Africa, Burkina Faso has been plagued by political instability since independence from France in 1960. It has suffered five military coups, the last of which cost the life of Thomas Sankara, who had waged war on poverty, corruption and illiteracy. Yet Burkina Faso's growth was surprisingly strong during the 1980s, as it made the best of its meagre assets in cotton, gold and livestock. The country is also fortunate in its relative lack of ethnic conflict, and the several religions practised coexist peacefully. There have, however, been two wars with Mali, and support for Taylor's rebels in the Liberian civil war. This introduction to Burkina Faso highlights the historical and contemporary factors that account for the country's instability, considers its ethnic, religious and social contours, examines its economic policies and prospects, analyzes its external relations, and assesses the chances of democracy. |

Click Here | Product Description: The change in name from Upper Volta to Burkina Faso has mirrored equally important changes in the country's lifestyle. Yet despite numerous military and civilian governments since 1960, Burkina Faso still faces many of the same challenges it confronted decades ago: malnutrition, drought, lack of natural resources, debt, and the difficulties of industrial development in a region that is often unstable. At the same time, the people of Burkina Faso prove to be hard working and resourceful, and have persevered through many harsh conditions, and continue to improve the standard of living in their nation. The "Historical Dictionary of Burkina Faso" is the second edition of Daniel McFarland's "Historical Dictionary of Upper Volta" from 1978. As with the earlier edition, this volume provides information on important persons, places and events, political parties, government organizations, economy, and culture. Most importantly, new entries update information on occurrences in the twenty years that have intervened between the two volumes, providing perspectives on recent social, international, political, and cultural issues. The book also includes a detailed chronology of the history of Upper Volta/Burkina Faso, from precolonial times to the current changes in governmental structure and Burkina Faso's relationship to other countries in the region, many in similar situations. The bibliography in the current edition contains 1300 entries, more than one-third in English, versus the 600 entries found in the 1978 edition, and increases the number of English language sources considerably. With such a substantial revision, scholars and librarians will find the "Historical Dictionary of Burkina Faso" a major addition to their collection. The expansion in resources and materials of interest, as well as the chronological and governmental updates, make this new edition an unavoidable part of any complete collection. |

Click Here | Product Description: The diversity and complexity of African vernacular architecture remain widely unknown both to the general public and to architects. Yet Upper Volta (Burkino Faso) encompasses an astonishing variety of design principles and building techniques that belie the widespread image of the primitive hut so readily associated with rural Africa. This work provides a convincing interpretation of the relationship between spatial organisation and daily activity in Gurunsi life. |

Product Description: Thomas Sankara led the revolution that took place in the West African country Burkina Faso from 1983 to 1987. In this collection of speeches and interviews, Sankara explains how during those years the peasants and workers of Burkina Faso: established a popular revolutionary government; started to fight the hunger, illiteracy, and economic backwardness imposed by imperialist domination; and began to combat the oppression of women inherited from thousands of years of class society. Their actions set an example not only for the workers and peasants of Africa but for those of the whole world, then and now. Sankara was assassinated October 15, 1987, in a coup carried out by the country s current president, Blaise Compaoré. Second edition includes a new introduction by editor Michel Prairie, foreword, maps, chronology and glossary, as well as an index. Thirty-two page photo section features many unpublished photos of the Burkina Faso revolution. Of the first edition, published by Pathfinder in 1988, Victoria Brittain wrote in the London Guardian;, The courage and originality which made him and Burkina Faso the inspiration they were to so many Africans shine out of this collection of his most important speeches.
