Click Here | Product Description: Sinn Féin ("ourselves alone") is one of the most controversial political movements in Ireland. Here, for the first time, is the complete story of the rise and fall-and rise again-of a party that repeatedly has reshaped its identity over the course of a hundred years, moving from dual monarchy to dual strategy-the gun and the ballot box. From Arthur Griffith to Gerry Adams, this is a roll-call of major personalities from Irish and British history and politics, including Eamon de Valera, Countess Constance Markievicz, David Lloyd George, Michael Collins, Ruairí " Brádaigh, Cathal Goulding, Tomás MacGiolla, Margaret Thatcher, and Martin McGuinness. Now at the beginning of the twenty-first century, Sinn Féin seems poised to play a pivotal role in the Irish political arena, north and south, well into the future. Its place in history is still being written. |

Click Here | Amazon.com Review: The violent struggles of Northern Ireland have consumed journalist Peter Taylor since his first assignment there in 1972. One fateful day, "Bloody Sunday," 14 unarmed men were gunned down by British paratroopers; this was the turning point in Taylor's journalistic career, inspiring him to make 50 documentaries and write five books on the troubled nation. Behind the Mask, his sixth, is a provocative foray into the organization so synonymous with violence: the Irish Republican Army and its political wing of Sinn Fein. Based on one of Taylor's television documentaries shown in both the United Kindom and the United States, he was given unprecedented access to members of the Republican movement--a rare journalistic feat. Taylor describes the interviews as "intense, often emotional and remarkably frank." From his interviews with dozens of I.R.A. and Sinn Fein members (including some confessed killers), Taylor gained fascinating insight into the movement's past, present, and future goals. The I.R.A. is certainly not portrayed in a heroic light; Taylor is graphic in the descriptions of atrocities such as Enniskillen and the Harrods bombing. But the I.R.A. and Sinn Fein are given a voice, and readers may draw their own conclusions. Behind the Mask is an important book for those who want a better understanding of the conflict that has ripped Northern Ireland apart. |

Click Here | Product Description: Between 1916 and 1923 Ireland experienced a political as well as a military revolution. This book examines how--after the Easter Rising of 1916--radical revolutionaries formed a precarious coalition with (relatively) moderate politicians. The new Sinn Féin party routed its enemies, cooperated uneasily with the underground Irish government, and achieved most of its objectives before disintegrating in 1922. Its rapid collapse should not distract from its achievements--in particular its role in "democratizing" the Irish revolution--while its successors since have dominated the political life of independent Ireland. |

This study argues that political winners have become electoral losers in Northern Ireland. Sinn Fein was obliged to give up a lot to support the Good Friday Agreement--a deal which recognizes Northern Ireland, kept it within the United Kingdom, and asked republicans to assist in the governance of a political entity they fought to destroy. In contrast, the Social Democratic and Labor Party (SDLP) did not have to compromise much. Yet despite this, Sinn Fein has become politically dominant. This book looks at the the entire history of the two parties since 1970, and seeks to come to grips with the meaning of the recent ascent of Sinn Fein.
