Click Here | Product Description: With her extraordinary sense of humor still intact, Betty Kilgour presents her third book, I'd Rather be Shelling on Niue! This time Betty describes her experiences during the two years she and her husband, Bill, spent as volunteers with W.U.S.C. on the small island of Niue in the south Pacific. Her story of Nieu is of the country, the people and the ludicrous situations in which she often found herself. These real-life situations are seen within the framework of the culture of the native people, and through the eyes of the author who can see the lighter side of most situations. |

Click Here | Product Description: A blue law is a type of law, typically found in the United States, designed to enforce religious standards, particularly the observance of Sunday as a day of worship or rest, and a restriction on Sunday shopping. Most have been repealed, have been declared unconstitutional, or are simply unenforced, although prohibitions on the sale of alcoholic beverages, and occasionally almost all commerce, on Sundays are still enforced in many areas. Blue laws often prohibit an activity only during certain hours and there are usually exceptions to the prohibition of commerce, like grocery and drug stores. In some places blue laws may be enforced due to religious principles, but others are retained as a matter of tradition or out of convenience. Laws of this type are also found in non- Christian cultures such as Israel, where the day concerned is Saturday rather than Sunday, and Saudi Arabia, where the month of Ramadan is involved. In the Cook Islands, blue laws were first written legislation, enacted by the London Missionary Society in 1827, with the consent of ariki (chiefs). |

Click Here | Product Description: Market Potential Estimation Methodology Overview This study covers the outlook products in Niue. For the year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the Niue (in millions of U.S. dollars). Comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge Niue vis-a-vis regional and global totals. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.
This study does not report actual sales data, but gives, however, my estimates for the latent demand for products and services in Niue. For each category, I also show my estimates of how the P.I.E. grows over time (positive or negative growth). In order to make these estimates, a multi-stage methodology was employed that is often taught in courses on international strategic planning at graduate schools of business.
What is Latent Demand and the P.I.E.? The concept of latent demand is rather subtle. The term latent typically refers to something that is dormant, not observable or not yet realized. Demand is the notion of an economic quantity that a target population or market requires under different assumptions of price, quality, and distribution, among other factors. Latent demand, therefore, is commonly defined by economists as the industry earnings of a market when that market becomes accessible and attractive to serve by competing firms. It is a measure, therefore, of potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) or total revenues (not profit) if a market is served in an effi |

Click Here | Product Description: In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have occasionally been asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services in Niue. The purpose of the studies is to understand the density of demand within Niue and the extent to which Niue might be used as a point of distribution within Oceana. From an economic perspective, however, Niue does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries, rather, it represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another. In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for Niue over the next five years for hundreds of industries, categories and products. The goal of this report is to report my findings on the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by Niue when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales. For many items, latent demand is clearly observable in sales, as in the case for food or housing items. Consider, however, the category "satellite launch vehicles". Clearly, there are no launch pads in Niue used by the space industry to launch satellites. However, the core benefit of the vehicles (e.g. telecommunications, etc.) is "consumed" by the area served by Niue. Without Niue, in other words, the market for satellite launch vehicles would be lower for the population in Niue, Oceana, or the world in general. One needs to allocate, therefore, a portion of the worldwide economic demand for launch vehicles to both Oceana and Niue. The data presented are the result of various spatial econometric and time-series forecasting models which, for each category presented, are applied to forecast and allocate latent demand across all countries of the world and major distribution centers or centers of dominant influence within each country. This is accomplished knowing that economic fundamentals (e.g. income) generally vary from one country to another within a given country over time. In this report, I report the allocation for each category for Niue as an area of dominant influence in Oceana and, potentially, the world. |

Click Here | Product Description: For many years the authors have been concerned at the swift loss of culture and traditional skills in island societies due to the inroads of modern lifestyles and manufactured goods. This project was intended to record in photographs, diagrams, and bilingual text as many indigenour technical skills and their artistic extensions as possible, and to present them in easy-to-follow detail. Additionally, they sought to encourage the community to add to this file of knowledge before skilled elders die or emmigrate. The elders' lessons were recorded between 16 July and 22 September, 1990 in Niue. This first volume is drawn from that file. The teachers are women and men strong with skill and knowledge. Their identities are in the land that gives them a place to stand and the materials with which they work. Probably they are the last generation of their kind. It is hoped that they have been assisted in building a bridge to future generations of Niuean descendants, school children, artists, scholars, and others who will gain strength from their knowledge. |
