Click Here | Product Description: This new and thoroughly revised edition of Nicaragua details the country's unique history, culture, social reality, economics, foreign relations, and politics. Its historical coverage considers Nicaragua from before independence as well as during the nationalist liberal era, the US marine occupation, the Somoza dictatorship, the Sandinista regime, and the conservative restoration following 1990. The Fourth Edition documents how the more enduring reality of this Central American country may not be the Sandinista Revolution but the historical and ongoing interventions by which the United States - the "eagle" to the north - continues to shape Nicaraguan political, economic, and social life. The new edition also includes a fully updated annotated bibliography. Praise for the third edition: |

Product Description:
In 1976, at age twenty-five, Stephen Kinzer arrived in Nicaragua as a freelance journalist--and became a witness to history. He returned many times during the years that followed, becoming Latin America correspondent for the Boston Globe in 1981 and joining the foreign staff of the New York Times in 1983. That year he openedthe New York Times Managua bureau, making that newspaper the first daily in America to maintain a full-time office in Nicaragua. Widely considered the best-connected journalist in Central America, Kinzer personally met and interviewed people at every level of the Somoza, Sandinistas and contra hierarchies, as well as dissidents, heads of state, and countless ordinary citizens throughout the region. Blood of Brothers is Kinzer's dramatic story of the centuries-old power struggle that burst into the headlines in 1979 with the overthrow of the Somoza dictatorship. It is a vibrant portrait of the Nicaraguan people and their volcanic land, a cultural history rich in poetry and bloodshed, baseball and insurrection. |

Excerpt from book: Ch. I.] ALLIGATORS. '. sand-bank that extends down to the mouth of the river. A long, deep branch from the river is a favourite resort for alligators. At the far end of a sand-spit, near where some low trees grew, I saw several dark objects lying close to the water on the shelving banks. They were alligators basking in the sun. As I approached, most of them crawled into the water. Mr. Hollenbeck had been down a few days before shooting at them with a rifle, to try to get a skull of one of the monsters, and I passed a dead one that he had shot. As I walked up the beach, I saw many that were not less than fifteen feet in length. One lay motionless, and thinking it was another dead one, I was walking up to it, and had got within three yards, when I saw the film over its eye moving, otherwise it was quite still, and its teeth projecting beyond its lips added to its intense ugliness and appearance of death. There was no doubt, however, about the movement of the eye-covers, and I went back a short distance to look for a stick to throw at him; but when I turned again, he was just disappearing into the water. It is the habit of these animals to lie quite still, and catch animals that come near them. Whether or not he was waiting until I came within the swoop of his mighty tail I know not, but I had the feeling that I had escaped a great danger. It was curious that he should have been so bold only a few days after Mr. Hollenbeck had been down shooting at them. There were not less than twenty altogether, and they swam out into the middle of the inlet and floated about, looking like logs in the water, excepting that one .stretched up his head and gave a bellow like a bull. They sometimes kill calves and young horses, and I was told of one that had seized a full-grown horse, but its str... |

Click Here | Product Description: Whatever happened to Nicaragua? In the 1980s it was a byword for revolution, a bogeyman for US governments and a symbol of Latin America's quest for new paths to development and social justice. But since the Sandinistas' electoral defeat in 1990 it has dropped out of the headlines. In the new millennium, Nicaragua continues to be buffeted by international forces, although rather than troops, the US now sends the International Monetary Fund. Nicaraguan's daily lives are dominated by a history of poverty, one which makes them the most indebted country in the region, although they retain a vibrant civil society and a rich culture. The country has resurfaced in the international media due to the disastrous effects of Hurricane Mitch, the worst natural disaster to hit Central America this century. Yet in spite of hurricanes and earthquakes, Nicaragua is still a country of great natural beauty, with lakes and volcanoes creating a spectacular landscape. Nicaragua in Focus is an authoritative and up-to-date guide to this fascinating country. It explores the land, history and politics (including its crucial and difficult relationship with the US), economy, society and people, culture and environment, and includes tips on where to go and what to see. |
