Click Here | Product Description: Poor even by the standards of West Africa, Burkina Faso has been plagued by political instability since independence from France in 1960. It has suffered five military coups, the last of which cost the life of Thomas Sankara, who had waged war on poverty, corruption and illiteracy. Yet Burkina Faso's growth was surprisingly strong during the 1980s, as it made the best of its meagre assets in cotton, gold and livestock. The country is also fortunate in its relative lack of ethnic conflict, and the several religions practised coexist peacefully. There have, however, been two wars with Mali, and support for Taylor's rebels in the Liberian civil war. This introduction to Burkina Faso highlights the historical and contemporary factors that account for the country's instability, considers its ethnic, religious and social contours, examines its economic policies and prospects, analyzes its external relations, and assesses the chances of democracy. |

Dr. Showalter examines language attitudes and bilingualism in four rural speech communities in Burkina Faso, West Africa. His study provides a detailed look into ways in which these communities respond to the everyday linguistic diversity of their milieu. Maps and diagrams add clarity in explaining the linguistic situation. For his research, he adapted the matched-guise testing method in order to explore attitudes toward the language variation that permeates rural West African life. His results demonstrate the viability of indirect testing methods in this environment. They reveal, on the one hand, numerical measures of linguistic variability and bilingual achievement, and on the other hand, community attitudes toward shared ethnic identity, social contact, linguistic awareness, personal character, and social status. He fleshed out the survey data with ethnographic insights gained during the two years he spent in rural Burkina Faso carrying out his research. Linguists and anthropologists interested in the interplay of language and society, as well as Africanists seeking a better understanding of the sometimes astounding linguistic diversity of the region, will find this book especially valuable. Click Here | Product Description: When an international health initiative succeeded in wiping out river blindness in Burkina Faso, it allowed the settlement of the sparsely populated Volta Valley by the Mossi people--a development plan by which the Burkinabe government sought to relieve population pressure, establish communities, and increase cotton production. Anthropologist Della McMillan followed this visionary plan over twelve years as people relocated communities, founded farms, dealt with officials, entered the market, and in some instances moved on. Her study examines the question of how development occurs or fails to occur and offers unusual insight into how visions of progress--held by developers, settlers, and even researchers--originate and are revised. |

Click Here | Product Description: Each book in Oxfam's "Country Profiles" series describes the social, political, historical, environmental and economic context of Oxfam's work in one particular country. The books focus on the real lives of ordinary people and the major development issues that face them, and are illustrated with photographs, maps and diagrams. Burkina Faso is one of the poorest nations in the world. It faces serious environmental problems, a history of colonial exploitation and few natural resources. Its riches lie in the resilience and hard work of its people, fighting, with the support of agencies like Oxfam, the desertification of their land and to develop a sustainable and self-sufficient economy. |
